My 30-Year Career Ended in a Day: 6 Things I’d Do Now

Before you lose your job, there are things you don’t realize you’re going to wish you’d handled while the paycheck was still showing up.

Job loss looks very different after almost three years of unemployment, especially for corporate survivors who spent years assuming that being good at the job meant the rest would somehow work itself out.

I spent thirty years in corporate America. Now I’m far enough outside of it to see some of the stuff I barely thought about while I was still employed, and a few of those decisions are still biting me in the ass.

This one gets into:

• what happens to work relationships once you’re no longer seeing those people every day
• how much of your career can disappear behind a login you don’t control
• the benefits and compensation you barely notice until they’re gone
• the money decisions that feel unimportant when another paycheck is coming
• what happens when “I’ll just get another job” stops being a reliable plan

This isn’t layoff panic and it isn’t career advice from somebody safely employed telling you to update your résumé. It’s what job loss, unemployment and a very long job hunt look like from almost three years down the road.

If you’ve already been through this, tell me the thing you wish you’d handled before the job was gone. I know I haven’t thought of everything, and apparently we’re building the employee exit manual nobody bothered to give us.
